Vasilije is a 74 year old man. Pleasant, cheerful, very quiet at moments, but mostly talkative. He says he is an athlete as long as he can remember. He used to be a sprinter, but nowadays he trains shot put and discus throw as a track and field veteran. We met each other at the shot put field on a stadium in Ljubljana. He always liked to talk about his younger years, adventures and other interesting stories… Apart from track and field, Vasko, as friends call him, still enjoys lifting weights. So, recently, he decided to enter a bench press competition. Out of deep respect I have for him, I followed him around on the bench press competition and made a short story. I titled it “Old man and a bench” because I noticed quite some mocking stares and glances from younger competitors and heard lots of jokes on the account of his age. Vasko was by far the oldest competitor of the competition, his lift of 130 kg and his age factor got him a well deserved 1st place, beating all the younger competitors. One could say that “Old man and a bench” is a romantic story with a happy end of an elderly gentleman who wanted to prove to himself he still got what it takes.
